Canadian lawmakers name on authorities to halt imports of long-tailed macaques

A half-dozen members of the Ontario provincial parliament are urging the federal government to right away droop imports of long-tailed macaques into the nation over issues the monkeys could also be contaminated with tuberculosis and pose a biosecurity danger.

Of their Oct. 1 letter, the lawmakers cite reviews that dozens of contaminated monkeys arrived in Canada between 2011 and 2014 because of a “discredited” screening system, and say the Canadian Meals Inspection Company “has not strengthened oversight, imposed extra controls, or acknowledged the inadequacy of outdated testing protocols.”

“Proof now confirms that monkeys contaminated with tuberculosis… are getting into North America by way of the worldwide primate commerce,” wrote the lawmakers, who’re all members of the Ontario New Democratic Social gathering, an opposition occasion that describes itself as social democratic and who function opposition members within the Ontario Legislative Meeting.
